Why we do not take every car insurance request

01

The economics do not work

A standalone car insurance policy for a new expat earns us around €15 to €25 per year after tax. Proper setup takes three to four hours. That is below minimum wage, with no foundation to serve you well.

02

We can only protect what we can see

If your agent holds your other contracts and you give us only the car insurance, we cannot see your full situation. We cannot protect someone partially. And we will not pretend we can.

03

Expat car insurance is genuinely complex

No German claims history means you start at zero. International licences add underwriting layers. Not every insurer covers this. The cheapest option is often the most dangerous one.

04

Transparency always loses against a sales pitch

A BMW dealer only tells you the good parts. An agent only explains the upsides. We have to explain everything — including what could go wrong. We will always seem like the harder choice next to someone who just says yes.

Something we learned the hard way

Some clients say: do the car insurance first and we will move everything else to you later. It has never happened. Not once. We stopped accepting this arrangement entirely.

Your agent is not on your side — and that is not their fault

An insurance agent works for an insurance company. By law their job is to sell that company's products. An independent broker like NEOdirect works for you. We are legally obligated to act in your interest and compare the entire market.

In English both roles often get called the same thing. And here is what surprises most people: some agents operate under a company name that sounds completely independent. "Global Insurance Services", "Expat Finance Group" — the name gives no indication of how they are legally structured. Underneath they are still tied to one or two insurers. What matters is whether they hold a Maklerzulassung, a broker licence. If they cannot show you that, they are an agent regardless of what their business card says.

English is also easier to use for obscuring insurance terms than German. A smooth explanation can quietly skip exactly the clauses that matter most when you need to make a claim. We have seen this happen.

A real scenario, simplified
You ask us for a car insurance quote € 1,400 / year
Agent hears about it and offers you € 1,280 / year
You saved € 120
What the agent's policy does not cover that ours did Read the fine print
