Top up your public cover

Dental insurance

Zahnzusatzversicherung

Public health insurance only pays a basic allowance at the dentist. High-quality fillings, crowns and implants can quickly cost you thousands out of pocket. A supplemental dental plan closes that gap for a few euros a month. We compare the tariffs with you, all explained in clear English.

Strong tariffs reimburse up to the full dentist bill.

Cleaning included

Professional teeth cleaning is typically covered once or twice a year.

Small premium

Solid dental plans often cost less than a coffee per week.

Keeps GKV

You stay in public health insurance. The plan simply tops it up.

What is Dental Insurance?

It helps cover dentures, crowns, implants, cleanings, and better fillings that the German public system does not fully pay for.

Who it is for

Anyone in public health insurance (GKV). The public system pays only a fixed basic allowance for dental work, so a supplemental plan is one of the most popular add-ons in Germany.

What you gain

High reimbursement for dentures, crowns and implants, better fillings without a surcharge, professional cleaning, and often root canal and gum treatments the public system would refuse.

What to weigh

Sign up while your teeth are healthy: treatments already advised by a dentist are excluded, and most tariffs cap what they pay in the first years through a benefit ladder (Zahnstaffel).

Note: Dental insurance is a supplemental top-up and does not replace statutory health insurance. Most plans cap benefits in the first years and exclude treatments already advised by a dentist.

★★★★★

“My dentist quoted €2.800 for a crown and an implant. Because I had signed up for a dental plan a year earlier, I paid a fraction of it. Best few euros a month I ever spent.”

Priya Nair Data analyst, Frankfurt
★★★★★

“I had no idea public insurance pays so little at the dentist. The team explained the benefit ladder and waiting periods in English and helped me pick a tariff that covers cleaning twice a year.”

Dental insurance costs at a glance

The premiums of all three tariffs depend on your age and on how many missing teeth are not yet replaced. Set both sliders and see the monthly premium of Allianz, UKV and Concordia side by side. No data, no sign-up.

30

The premium is the same for everyone within an insurer’s age band.

0

Missing teeth raise the premium. Each insurer handles this differently, and each accepts only a limited number.

Good to know: to take out a tariff, a short phone call is all it takes. We briefly walk you through each insurer’s health questions. There are only a handful, and going through them together simply prevents misunderstandings.

Your monthly premium

At 30 years old

  • Mein Zahnschutz 100 €18,77 /month
  • ZahnPRIVAT 100 €21,55 /month
  • ZAHN SORGLOS Our recommendation €32,67 /month

The tariffs are calculated to step up gently every few years instead of building ageing reserves. That is what keeps them this affordable while you are young.

The benefits explained

What supplemental dental insurance covers

Public health insurance covers only a basic standard at the dentist. A good dental plan steps in exactly where that standard ends. These are the treatment areas that matter most.

Professional cleaning (Zahnreinigung)

GKV does not pay for professional teeth cleaning, so you normally pay €80 to €150 per session yourself. Dental plans typically cover one or two cleanings a year in full or up to a fixed budget.

Fillings (Zahnfüllung)

The public system pays for a simple amalgam or basic composite filling. If you want a high-quality, tooth-colored composite or inlay, you pay the difference. A dental plan covers that surcharge.

Dental treatment (Zahnbehandlung)

Everyday treatment such as check-ups, fissure sealants and periodontitis (gum) therapy. Strong tariffs pay for gum treatments beyond the narrow cases the public system accepts.

Root canals (Wurzelbehandlung)

GKV only pays for a root canal if the tooth is deemed "worth preserving" under strict rules. Otherwise it pays for pulling the tooth instead. A dental plan covers modern root canal treatment so you can keep it.

Crowns and bridges (Kronen)

Dentures (Zahnersatz) are where the gap is biggest: the public system pays a fixed allowance of roughly half the basic standard. A dental plan raises your reimbursement to 80–100%, including ceramic instead of metal.

Implants (Implantate)

An implant with a crown easily costs €2.000 to €4.000 per tooth, and the public allowance barely dents that. Good tariffs reimburse implants at the same high rate as other dentures. This is the benefit to check most carefully.

Orthodontics (Kieferorthopädie)

For children, GKV pays only from a defined severity grade. Milder cases and invisible aligners are private. Some tariffs also include orthodontics for adults, which the public system almost never covers.

Anesthesia and comfort extras

General anesthesia or sedation for anxious patients, functional analysis before major work, and higher-grade materials: extras the public system treats as private wishes, but many tariffs include.

Prevention pays twice

Keeping your Bonusheft (dental check-up booklet) stamped every year raises the public allowance for dentures. Combined with a dental plan, your own share can shrink to almost nothing.

What to keep in mind

Good to know about dental plans

Dental insurance is straightforward, but a few rules decide whether a tariff pays smoothly when you need it. These are the ones worth understanding before you sign.

Sign up before you need it

Treatments a dentist has already advised or started are never covered. The right moment to sign up is while your teeth are fine.

Waiting periods

Many tariffs pay for dentures only after a waiting period of up to eight months, though some strong tariffs waive it entirely.

The benefit ladder (Zahnstaffel)

Almost every tariff caps total payouts in the first three to five years, for example €1.000 in year one. After the ladder ends, the cover is unlimited.

Health questions are short

The application mainly asks two things: whether a treatment is already advised or ongoing, and whether any teeth are missing and, if so, how many.

How reimbursement works

You simply upload the dentist's bill in the insurer's app, and it is reimbursed within one to two weeks.

Premiums rise with age

The tariffs are calculated to become somewhat more expensive every few years instead of building ageing reserves, which makes them very affordable in younger years.

FAQ

Questions and tips about dental insurance with the Sorglos guarantee

A flawless set of teeth radiates health, attractiveness and confidence. But you cannot always rely on thorough dental care and good genes. Sooner or later, almost everyone runs into dental problems. That makes supplemental dental tariffs a sensible product for everyone. With our SORGLOS package you are excellently covered and protect yourself from high out-of-pocket costs and co-payments.

Value high-quality dentures and the best possible dental treatment. Pay attention to the following points in a supplemental dental tariff:

  • Comprehensive benefits: Dentures, dental treatment, prophylaxis and, where relevant, orthodontics should be broadly covered in your tariff. Look especially for potential restrictions on the provision of dentures.
  • High reimbursement rates: The cost reimbursement should be as generous as possible. Strong tariffs have a high reimbursement rate: between 70 and 100% of the bill should be reimbursed.
  • High age limits: Especially for orthodontic benefits, private health insurers often only pay up to a certain age, for example 18 or 21. But teeth can still shift later in life, and an accident can make orthodontic treatment necessary.

Many insurers require a waiting period of eight months before benefits can be claimed. If you are planning a professional teeth cleaning at the dentist soon, for example, make sure the insurance waives the initial waiting period for it. With “ZAHN PLUS” you can claim benefits for dental treatment, dentures or orthodontics immediately.

Yes, if the dentures become necessary because of an accident.

Otherwise a waiting period of 8 months applies. That is the time between the start of the insurance and the start of the treatment.

In the first three years the following maximum reimbursement amounts apply:

  • 1st insurance year: €1.500
  • 2nd insurance year: €3.000
  • 3rd insurance year: €4.500
  • From the 4th insurance year: full benefits

Yes, a supplemental dental insurance can be deducted from your taxes. It is declared in the “Vorsorgeaufwendungen” (provision expenses) annex, alongside statutory health, long-term care and pension insurance and other policies. Whether the costs are actually deductible depends on a number of criteria, including your income level, marital status and number of children.

Your cover is limited only in rare cases. There is no entitlement to benefits in the following situations:

  • Teeth that were already diseased when the application was made
  • Teeth that were missing and not yet permanently replaced when the application was made
  • Treatments that were already known, medically advised or already started when the application was made
  • Teeth that never developed (missing tooth buds)

So that you immediately understand what your insurer and your dentist are talking about, we have summarised the most important technical terms around supplemental dental cover:

  • Regelversorgung (standard care): Corresponds to the benefits catalogue of the public health insurance. Standard care guarantees a sufficient, appropriate and economical treatment of the condition of your teeth.
  • Festzuschuss (fixed allowance): The amount the public health insurance pays towards your dentures. The amount depends on the diagnosis.
  • Heil- und Kostenplan (treatment and cost plan): Filled in by the dentist and sent to your public health insurer. It contains the diagnosis, the planned therapy and the expected costs.
  • Gleichartige Versorgung (same-type care): Means you have chosen standard care, but with additional benefits.
  • Andersartige Versorgung (different-type care): Applies when you choose a solution other than standard care.
  • Gebührenordnung für Zahnärzte (GOZ): The fee schedule that regulates the remuneration of dental services outside the public health insurance.
  • Härtefall (hardship case): Under the hardship rules, insured persons can receive a fixed allowance of 100 percent, for example when their gross monthly income does not exceed certain thresholds.
  • Bonusheft (bonus booklet): You receive the bonus booklet from your dentist. It documents your check-ups so that your public health insurer may grant a higher fixed allowance towards dentures.

Note: The benefits shown here refer to the current Concordia product. For contracts concluded at an earlier date, the scope of benefits may differ. Benefits may be presented here in abbreviated form. You will find the exact scope of benefits in the insurance terms. For further information, please contact your Concordia advisor.
