Nina Feddersen is a private health insurance specialist for expats at NEOdirect. She began her insurance career in 2012 with vocational training at Debeka, where health insurance was a central part of her professional development. Her work there also gave her detailed knowledge of health insurance for German civil servants, including the interaction between Beihilfe and private cover.
At CHECK24, she gained experience advising a wide range of customers entirely by phone and online. At ottonova, she advised many expat customers in English. This gave her practical experience with their questions, the tariffs available to them and the challenges of explaining German health insurance to people from different backgrounds. Today, she brings that experience to her work at NEOdirect.
Her focus is on explaining the differences that matter to you, including the advantages and limitations of the plans under consideration, so you can make an informed decision.

Your premium depends in part on your age when you take out the policy, your health, and the benefits agreed in the plan. A low monthly premium alone does not show whether a plan is right for you. The deductible, possible out-of-pocket costs, and cover for your family also matter. With a deductible, you pay an agreed share of eligible costs yourself. Consider premium refunds only in line with the relevant policy terms. We compare the total cost with you, not just the price shown in the quote.
Not automatically. What matters is the cover in the specific plan and your personal situation. For example, check the terms for dental treatment, psychotherapy, medical aids, and hospital treatment. Reimbursement rates, benefit limits, and other conditions may vary. Even a claim of “100% reimbursement” needs to be read in the context of the policy terms. A sound decision starts with your needs, not a blanket promise that private insurance is always better.
Returning is not always possible at will. It depends on statutory requirements and your circumstances, including your employment status and income. Your age can also make returning significantly more difficult. A switch to private health insurance should not be a short-term cost-saving decision. Discuss possible changes, such as parental leave, a career break, or self-employment, in advance. We consider your future life stages as well as your current situation.
Private health insurance does not offer premium-free family cover like statutory health insurance does. Each family member insured privately has their own premium. If one parent is covered by statutory health insurance and the other privately, the children's cover needs to be assessed separately. Free family cover under statutory insurance is not available in every situation. A comparison should therefore include the whole family, including possible changes in income and family plans.
With private health insurance, you generally receive an invoice and submit it to your insurer for reimbursement. You remain responsible for paying the provider. Whether reimbursement arrives before the payment due date depends on processing times and cannot be guaranteed. Reimbursement is based on your plan and may be reduced by a deductible or other out-of-pocket costs. Direct billing may be possible for hospital treatment. For larger planned treatments, it is a good idea to confirm cost coverage with your insurer in advance.
