Rental Agreement

What should I check in a German rental agreement?

← Back to the knowledge base
Mietvertrag

Your rental agreement sets out the rent, additional costs, notice periods and responsibilities for your home.

What is it?

Read the German Mietvertrag alongside its annexes. Check whether utilities are advance payments or a flat rate, how rent increases work, and which repairs or cleaning obligations are actually included.

Why it matters

A clear contract and a signed handover record can prevent avoidable disputes later.

Practical example: Before signing, compare the advertised warm rent with the basic rent, operating-cost advance and heating advance shown in the contract.
