Electronic Health Card

What is the German electronic health card?

← Back to the knowledge base
Elektronische Gesundheitskarte (eGK)

The electronic health card proves your statutory health insurance membership when you visit a doctor, dentist or hospital.

What is it?

The electronic health card, or eGK, is issued by your statutory health insurer. It stores administrative insurance data and lets medical practices bill your insurer directly. It is not a payment card and does not replace your insurance membership.

Why it matters

Keep the card safe and take it to appointments. Tell your insurer promptly if it is lost, stolen or your personal details change.

Practical example: After joining a Krankenkasse, you receive your eGK by post. Show it at a GP appointment so the practice can verify your cover.
