What is it?
The inquiry can be useful when previous diagnoses, treatment, medication, or unanswered medical questions might lead to different underwriting outcomes. An insurer may indicate possible acceptance, a Risikozuschlag (risk surcharge), an exclusion, a request for records, a postponement, or no offer. The response is an indication, not a binding contract and not a guarantee that a formal application will be accepted. The information supplied must still be accurate and sufficiently complete; anonymity is not permission to hide unfavourable facts. Ask how the inquiry is recorded, who receives the information, and whether the eventual formal application will use the same facts. Insurers can ask further questions later, and the final form may use different wording or look-back periods. Compare the responses carefully, including benefit limits and any exclusions, rather than selecting the first positive-sounding answer. Personal-data handling and adviser processes should be explained before records are shared.
Why it matters
A Risikovoranfrage can reduce avoidable surprises and help an applicant compare possible routes before creating a formal application record. It is especially helpful when the medical history is complex, but it cannot remove the duty of disclosure or predict every final decision. Ask for the outcome in writing, retain the submitted information, and obtain current advice on the insurer's process and data handling.
Expert tip
If your medical history includes previous diagnoses, treatment or medication, consider clarifying possible underwriting outcomes before submitting a formal PKV application. A broker can coordinate an anonymous risk assessment with selected insurers so you can compare their preliminary responses before deciding where to apply. These responses are non-binding. Your formal application must still be completed fully and accurately, and the insurer makes the final underwriting decision.
