Insurance against disability
The risk of disability is often underestimated. Currently, almost every fourth worker and every fifth employee is disabled or unable to work. The causes for this are 85% diseases and 15% accidents. Government benefits have been cut drastically in this sector. This applies in particular to everyone born after 1961. The average statutory disability pension is currently €700 per month.

Tip
REQUIREMENT
It makes sense to take care of disability insurance early on. If you are young and healthy, you get good protection at the best conditions.
PRE-EXISTING ILLNESS
Health questions must be answered fully and truthfully. Don’t hesitate to mention illnesses that you basically consider to be insignificant. Incorrect or incomplete information can release the insurer from its obligation to provide benefits.
DURATION
Don’t let the contract end too early, even if it seems cheaper. A term agreement up to your retirement age – for employees up to the age of 67 – is absolutely advisable in order to avoid payment gaps.
PENSION LEVEL
Calculate your needs taking into account other income to which you are entitled. It is advisable to pay attention to a supplementary insurance guarantee so that you can increase your pension later without a medical examination.
FAQ
WHY SHOULD YOU GET DISABILITY INSURANCE?
Statistics show that one in five workers becomes disabled before the start of their old-age pension.
In the handicraft sector, even one in four becomes unable to work. Since the disability pension for everyone born after 1961 has been replaced by the disability pension, there is a special need here. Due to the possibility of being referred to another profession, any job in the general labor market must be accepted.
The statutory disability pension is so low that it does not even cover the basic needs of a working person. Every responsible professional should close the supply gap that has arisen in this way.
WHO SHOULD GET DISABILITY INSURANCE
In general, every employed person should see private insurance against disability as an absolute must, since the benefits from the statutory disability pension in the event of a disability are nowhere near sufficient to secure their livelihood.
Workers, employees and craftsmen in particular need protection against occupational disability, but also trainees and those starting their careers.
Most self-employed and freelancers are not entitled to the statutory disability pension. Even housewives, pupils and students are often not covered at all. However, disability insurance is essential.
The same applies to civil servants, who should take out additional insurance, because the benefits in the event of incapacity to work have also fallen significantly.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM STATUTORY PENSION INSURANCE TODAY?
For those born after 1961, the disability pension model was replaced by the disability pension: You only receive the full disability pension (approx. 34% of your last gross income) if you are able to work less than 3 hours a day.
If you are able to work 3-6 hours a day, you can only count on half the disability pension (approx. 17% of the last gross income).
If the employee is available for more than 6 hours, there is no performance whatsoever, since the profession learned is not taken into account and the pure ability to work in any possible job counts.
If you were born before January 2nd, 1961, you will be in a slightly better position and will receive half the disability pension even if you cannot work more than six hours a day in the job you learned or a comparable job.
HOW HIGH SHOULD YOUR DISABILITY PENSION BE PER MONTH?
The optimal level of disability pension depends on your personal needs.
However, you should secure at least a third of your current net salary, 60% to 80% would be ideal.
When calculating, you should take into account any payments from company pension schemes or income from rent and interest, because the lower you can calculate your pension amount.
The disability pension should always be high enough to make it possible to pay pension contributions even in an emergency.
It is also possible to agree on a waiver of contributions to your pension scheme in the event of disability.
WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER DURING THE HEALTH EXAMINATION?
The health questions must always be answered completely and truthfully in order not to jeopardize the existing insurance cover.
Insurance companies often ask about doctor visits in the last five years. In the case of a hospital stay, the last ten years are queried.
Especially in the event of a claim, the insurance company reserves the right to check your details carefully.
This is done by releasing the doctor treating you from their duty of confidentiality. In addition to the health questions, precise information on hobbies and occupations is also required.
If your job changes during the contract period or you start a risky hobby, this does not have to be reported.
