Key benefits of travel insurance

Why every expat traveling from Germany needs Reisekrankenversicherung.

Medical emergency abroad
Hospital stays, emergency surgery, and doctor visits are covered worldwide. A single hospital night in India can cost ₹50,000+ at a private hospital — your insurer pays directly or reimburses you.
Trip cancellation
If you can't travel due to sudden illness, accident, or family emergency, trip cancellation insurance reimburses your flight and hotel costs — flights to India can cost €600–1,200.
Lost & delayed luggage
Compensation if your luggage is lost, stolen, or significantly delayed. Covers essential purchases you need to make while waiting for your bags — especially useful on long-haul flights to India.
Repatriation to Germany
If you're seriously ill or injured abroad, your insurer arranges and pays for medical transport back to Germany — this alone can cost €30,000–80,000 from India without insurance.
💡
German GKV only covers EU emergencies
Your German statutory health insurance (GKV) provides limited emergency cover within the EU — but for trips to India, it covers absolutely nothing. Even in the EU, GKV only covers what the local system would charge — not a medical repatriation flight. For any trip outside Germany, you need separate travel insurance (Reisekrankenversicherung). At ~€10/year for an annual plan, it's one of the cheapest and most important insurances you can have.

Real situations where travel insurance saves you

How Reisekrankenversicherung protects Indian expats abroad.

Scenic travel destination with mountains and lake — travel insurance for expats in Germany
Hospitalized in India during family visit
An expat developed severe food poisoning during Diwali in Mumbai and was hospitalized for 4 days at a private hospital. The bill: ₹3,20,000 (~€3,600). His travel insurance covered everything — hospital, medication, and doctor fees. Without insurance, GKV would have paid nothing.
Flight cancelled — trip cancellation insurance kicked in
A family of four had booked flights to Delhi for ₹3,50,000 (~€900 per person) when the father fell ill and couldn't travel. Trip cancellation insurance reimbursed the full €3,600 in flight costs that would otherwise have been lost.
Luggage lost on connecting flight via Dubai
An expat's suitcase went missing during a connection in Dubai on the way to Bangalore. It arrived 5 days late. Travel insurance reimbursed €400 for essential clothing and toiletries purchased during the wait, plus compensated for the delayed baggage.

Good to know — what to consider

Important details about travel insurance for expats.

  • Annual plans are much cheaper than single-trip insurance — from ~€10/year for individuals, ~€25/year for families
  • Most annual plans cover trips up to 42–56 days each — check the limit if you visit India for extended periods
  • Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered — declare them honestly and ask us about options
  • Trip cancellation insurance is separate from medical travel insurance — you may want both
  • Some credit cards include basic travel insurance — but coverage is often limited and has many exclusions
  • Always carry your insurance card and emergency hotline number when traveling
We help you find the right combination of medical travel insurance and trip cancellation coverage based on how often and where you travel.

Who needs travel insurance

Reisekrankenversicherung is essential for anyone leaving Germany.

  • Expats traveling to India to visit family — GKV covers nothing in India, and private hospital bills add up fast
  • Frequent travelers within and outside Europe — an annual plan covers unlimited trips for just ~€10/year
  • Families with children — family plans cover everyone affordably, and kids get sick more often when traveling
  • Anyone booking expensive trips — trip cancellation insurance protects your investment if plans change unexpectedly

FAQ — Travel Insurance (Reisekrankenversicherung)

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does my German health insurance (GKV) cover me in India?+
No. German statutory health insurance (GKV) provides no coverage in India whatsoever. Even within the EU, GKV coverage is limited to local rates and does not include repatriation. You need separate Reisekrankenversicherung for any trip outside Germany.
Annual plan or single-trip — which is better?+
If you travel at least once per year — even a short weekend trip — an annual plan is almost always cheaper. Annual plans start from ~€10/year for individuals and ~€25/year for families, covering unlimited trips up to 42–56 days each. Single-trip insurance only makes sense for very rare, one-off trips.
What if my trip to India is longer than 56 days?+
Standard annual plans have a per-trip limit (usually 42–56 days). If you plan longer stays — for example, visiting family in India for 2–3 months — you'll need a long-stay travel insurance policy or a special tariff. We can find options that cover trips of 90+ days.
Is trip cancellation insurance included?+
No, trip cancellation insurance (Reiserücktrittsversicherung) is separate from travel medical insurance (Reisekrankenversicherung). We recommend both — especially if you book expensive flights to India. Cancellation insurance reimburses your costs if you can't travel due to illness, accident, or other covered reasons.
What should I do if I have a medical emergency abroad?+
Call the 24/7 emergency hotline on your insurance card immediately. They will guide you to the nearest suitable hospital, coordinate treatment, and arrange direct payment if possible. Keep all receipts and medical documents. Contact us at NEOdirect if you need help navigating the claims process — we support you in English.
