What are Pflegegrade and how do they affect my benefits?+
Germany uses a 5-level care grade system (Pflegegrad 1–5). The MDK (medical review board) assesses your care needs and assigns a grade. Higher grades mean more statutory benefits — but also higher actual costs. Your Pflegezusatz pays out based on your assigned Pflegegrad, with higher payments for higher care needs.
How much does Pflegezusatz cost?+
Premiums depend on your age at entry, health status, and chosen benefit level. A 30-year-old can expect ~€25–35/month for solid gap coverage. At 40, premiums are ~€40–60/month. At 50+, costs rise significantly — which is why starting early is so important. We compare all tariffs to find the best value.
When should I start Pflegezusatz?+
As early as possible — ideally in your 30s. Premiums are lowest when you're young, health screening is easiest to pass, and you lock in favorable rates for life. Waiting until your 50s can mean 2–3x higher premiums and potential rejection due to health issues.
Is there a waiting period before I can claim?+
Yes, most Pflegezusatz policies have a waiting period of 1–3 years (Wartezeit). During this time, you pay premiums but cannot claim benefits — unless care is needed due to an accident, which is typically covered immediately. Some premium tariffs offer shorter waiting periods.
What happens if I leave Germany?+
Most Pflegezusatz policies are tied to the German care system and require a German Pflegegrad assessment. If you leave Germany permanently, benefits may be limited or unavailable. Some international tariffs exist — we can advise on the best option if you're considering a future move.
