Is Hausratversicherung mandatory in Germany?+
Hausratversicherung is not legally mandatory, but many landlords require it as part of the rental contract. Even without a requirement, it's strongly recommended — without it, you bear the full cost of replacing your belongings after theft, fire, or water damage.
How much coverage do I need?+
The standard rule of thumb is €650 per square metre of your flat. So a 60 m² apartment would need around €39,000 in coverage. If you own high-value electronics, instruments, or jewellery, consider increasing the coverage or adding specific valuables protection.
Does it cover my bicycle?+
Standard Hausrat policies cover bicycles stolen from inside your locked flat. To cover bicycle theft outside your home (e.g., from the street or a bike rack), you need the Fahrraddiebstahl add-on. This is highly recommended if you use a bike regularly in Germany.
What happens if I'm under-insured?+
If your coverage amount is too low compared to the actual value of your belongings, the insurer can reduce your payout proportionally (Unterversicherung). For example, if you're insured for €20,000 but own €40,000 worth of items, the insurer may only pay 50% of any claim. That's why correct coverage calculation matters.
Can I get Hausrat if I live in a WG (shared flat)?+
Yes, but only your personal belongings are covered — not your flatmates' items. Each person in a WG should have their own Hausratversicherung. Some insurers offer special WG-friendly tariffs. We can help you find the right option for your shared living situation.
