What's covered vs. what's NOT covered

Understand exactly what Hausratversicherung protects — and its limits.

✅ What's covered
Furniture & household items: Tables, sofas, beds, kitchen appliances
Electronics: Laptop, TV, gaming console, speakers
Valuables: Jewellery, watches, musical instruments (with limits)
Bicycle theft: Covered if add-on is included — even outside your flat
→ Everything inside your flat, replaced at full new value.
❌ What's NOT covered
Car & motor vehicles: Covered by Kfz-Versicherung, not Hausrat
Building structure: Walls, roof, floors — that's Wohngebäudeversicherung
Deliberate damage: Intentional destruction is excluded
Gross negligence: Leaving windows open during a storm (some tariffs cover this)
→ We help you choose a tariff that minimizes exclusions.

What Hausratversicherung covers

Comprehensive protection for everything in your home.

Theft protection
Covers burglary and break-ins, including stolen electronics, cash (up to limits), and valuables. Bicycle theft add-on available for bikes stolen outside your flat.
Fire & lightning
Full replacement if your belongings are destroyed by fire, lightning strike, explosion, or smoke damage — covers the entire contents of your flat.
Water damage & storms
Protection against burst pipes, leaking washing machines, storm damage, and hail. Elementarschadenversicherung add-on covers flooding too.
Temporary accommodation
If your flat becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event, your insurer pays for hotel or temporary housing until you can move back in.
💡
Many landlords require Hausratversicherung
Some rental contracts in Germany explicitly require tenants to have home contents insurance. Even if yours doesn't, without Hausratversicherung you pay for everything out of pocket — a single water pipe burst can cost thousands of euros in ruined electronics and furniture. At ~€5/month, it's one of the cheapest and most essential insurances in Germany.

Real situations where Hausrat saves you

How home contents insurance protects Indian expats in Germany.

Water pipe burst ruined laptop & electronics
A burst pipe in the flat above flooded the living room. A MacBook Pro, gaming console, and TV worth €4,500 were destroyed. Hausratversicherung reimbursed the full replacement value — new-for-old — within 2 weeks.
Bicycle stolen from the courtyard
An expat's €1,200 e-bike was stolen overnight from the locked Innenhof. With the bicycle theft add-on, the insurer paid the full purchase price. Without insurance, that money would have been gone forever.
Kitchen fire destroyed appliances & furniture
A small kitchen fire spread to the living area, destroying furniture, kitchen appliances, and clothing worth €8,000. The insurer covered everything at replacement value and paid for 3 weeks of hotel accommodation while the flat was repaired.

Good to know — what to consider

Important details about home contents insurance in Germany.

  • Coverage amount is based on flat size in m² — typically €650 per m² is recommended
  • Bicycle theft is often an optional add-on — make sure to include it if you own a bike
  • Valuables like jewellery and cash have sub-limits — check your policy or add extra coverage
  • Elementarschaden (natural hazards like flooding) is a separate add-on — increasingly recommended
  • Some tariffs cover gross negligence (e.g., leaving a candle unattended) — we recommend these
  • Claims are paid at new-for-old replacement value, not the depreciated value of your items
We help you calculate the right coverage amount and choose the best tariff for your situation — so you're never under-insured.

Who should get Hausratversicherung

Home contents insurance is essential for almost everyone living in Germany.

  • Anyone renting a flat in Germany — your landlord's insurance does NOT cover your personal belongings
  • Expats with expensive electronics — laptops, monitors, gaming setups, cameras — one water leak can destroy it all
  • Musicians and hobbyists — instruments, sports equipment, and hobby gear can be covered at full value
  • Homeowners — even if you own, Hausrat covers your belongings inside (the building itself needs separate insurance)

FAQ — Home Contents Insurance (Hausratversicherung)

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Hausratversicherung mandatory in Germany?+
Hausratversicherung is not legally mandatory, but many landlords require it as part of the rental contract. Even without a requirement, it's strongly recommended — without it, you bear the full cost of replacing your belongings after theft, fire, or water damage.
How much coverage do I need?+
The standard rule of thumb is €650 per square metre of your flat. So a 60 m² apartment would need around €39,000 in coverage. If you own high-value electronics, instruments, or jewellery, consider increasing the coverage or adding specific valuables protection.
Does it cover my bicycle?+
Standard Hausrat policies cover bicycles stolen from inside your locked flat. To cover bicycle theft outside your home (e.g., from the street or a bike rack), you need the Fahrraddiebstahl add-on. This is highly recommended if you use a bike regularly in Germany.
What happens if I'm under-insured?+
If your coverage amount is too low compared to the actual value of your belongings, the insurer can reduce your payout proportionally (Unterversicherung). For example, if you're insured for €20,000 but own €40,000 worth of items, the insurer may only pay 50% of any claim. That's why correct coverage calculation matters.
Can I get Hausrat if I live in a WG (shared flat)?+
Yes, but only your personal belongings are covered — not your flatmates' items. Each person in a WG should have their own Hausratversicherung. Some insurers offer special WG-friendly tariffs. We can help you find the right option for your shared living situation.
