Does statutory accident insurance (gesetzliche Unfallversicherung) cover me at home?+
No. Statutory accident insurance only covers accidents that happen at work, during your commute, or at official work events. Accidents at home, during sports, on holiday, or anywhere else in your free time are NOT covered. Since about 70% of all accidents happen outside of work, private accident insurance is essential to close this gap.
How is the payout calculated after an accident?+
The payout depends on the degree of permanent disability, which is determined using the Gliedertaxe (body part scale). For example, losing full use of a hand might be rated at 55% disability. With a €200,000 insured sum and 225% progression, you'd receive significantly more than €110,000. We explain the Gliedertaxe in detail during your consultation.
Are pre-existing conditions a problem for accident insurance?+
Generally no. Unlike health insurance or BU (disability) insurance, private accident insurance rarely requires extensive health disclosures. Pre-existing conditions typically don't affect your application or premium. This makes Unfallversicherung one of the easiest insurances to obtain — even if you have health issues.
Can I insure my whole family in one policy?+
Yes. Many insurers offer family accident insurance that covers you, your spouse, and your children in a single policy — often at a significant discount compared to individual contracts. Children are especially important to insure since they're naturally more accident-prone. We help you find the best family tariff.
What's the difference between Unfallversicherung and Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung (BU)?+
Unfallversicherung pays a lump sum if you suffer permanent disability from an accident. BU (income protection) pays a monthly benefit if you can no longer work due to any cause — including illness. They complement each other: accident insurance handles sudden events with a big payout, while BU protects your monthly income long-term. We recommend both for comprehensive protection.
