Water damage ruins furniture & clothing: €2,000–€8,000

How it works
Three simple steps to get covered.
1
Tell us about your home
Apartment size, number of rooms, any valuables? We figure out the right sum insured for your situation.
2
We compare & recommend
As independent brokers we compare multiple insurers and find the best tariff — including bicycle theft, glass breakage, and surge protection if you need it.

What's covered
The four main risks your policy protects against.
🔥 Fire & lightning
Kitchen fires, electrical fires, lightning strikes — your furniture, electronics, and personal belongings are covered at full replacement value.
💧 Water damage
Burst pipes, leaking washing machines, overflow from upstairs — damage to your belongings from tap water is covered.
🔒 Burglary & theft
Break-ins, stolen electronics, jewellery, cash (up to limits) — plus damage caused during the burglary like broken doors and windows.
🌪️ Storm & hail
Damage from storms (wind force 8+), hail, or objects blown through windows — your belongings inside are protected.
⚠️
Beware of underinsurance
If the sum insured is too low, your insurer can reduce your payout proportionally — even if the claim itself is smaller than your coverage limit. For example, if you're insured for €20,000 but your belongings are worth €40,000, you may only get 50% of any claim. We help you calculate the right amount so this doesn't happen.
Real situations where it helps
Common scenarios that can cost you thousands.
Kitchen fire destroys your belongings
A forgotten pan on the stove catches fire. Your kitchen appliances, furniture, and curtains are destroyed. Home contents insurance covers the replacement cost of everything.
Burglary while visiting India
You come back from a trip home to find your apartment broken into. Laptop, TV, jewellery — gone. Insurance reimburses you for stolen items at replacement value.
Washing machine leak floods your flat
A burst hose floods your apartment overnight. Your sofa, rugs, and clothes are ruined. Insurance pays for replacement of all damaged belongings.
Good to know — what's usually not covered
Personal advice helps make sure you get the right coverage.
- Damage you cause intentionally or through gross negligence (some policies cover gross negligence — we recommend those)
- Damage to the building itself — that's your landlord's building insurance
- Damage you cause to other people's property — that's personal liability insurance
- Gradual damage from wear and tear or lack of maintenance
- Flood or earthquake damage (unless added as an extra — Elementarschadenversicherung)
- Items stored outside your home (e.g., garden furniture) unless specifically covered
This is why personal advice matters: we make sure your policy covers bicycle theft, glass breakage, surge damage, and other extras that many basic tariffs leave out.
Especially important for
If any of these apply to you, don't wait.
- Every expat renting in Germany — your landlord's insurance does NOT cover your personal belongings
- Anyone with expensive electronics — laptops, phones, cameras — these are prime burglary targets
- Families with children — more belongings, more to replace if something goes wrong
- People living in older buildings — higher risk of water damage from ageing pipes

FAQ — Home Contents Insurance
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What does home contents insurance cover?+
It covers your personal belongings inside your home against fire, water damage (from tap water), burglary and theft, and storm and hail damage. This includes furniture, electronics, clothing, kitchenware, and more — at full replacement value.
How much coverage (sum insured) do I need?+
A common rule of thumb is €650 per square metre of living space. So a 60m² apartment would need around €39,000 in coverage. But the right amount depends on what you actually own — we help you calculate it so you're not underinsured.
Is home contents insurance the same as liability insurance?+
No — they're two different policies. Home contents (Hausrat) protects your own belongings inside your home. Personal liability (Haftpflicht) covers damage you cause to others. Most expats need both.
Are my belongings covered during a move or while travelling?+
Many policies include "outside insurance" (Außenversicherung) that temporarily covers your belongings when they're outside your home — for example, luggage stolen from a hotel room while on holiday, or items during a move. Coverage and time limits vary by tariff.
How much does home contents insurance cost?+
Basic coverage starts from around €2–5 per month depending on your apartment size, location, and chosen extras. Adding bicycle theft, glass breakage, or surge protection increases the price slightly — but the difference is often just a few euros.
